2013 Calving season begins

Feeding Cows2013 Calving season begins

Calving the past ten days has been very challenging due to the 20 degree colder than normal temperatures. We have had almost no moisture yet. But night time temps have been in the single digits until tonight. Here are some scenes you might enjoy. The last photo of calf 660 with his mother is special. You can’t see it well but his right leg is in a cast from the hock down. Thursday we helped him in to the world via a breech delivery. Later that day we found his mother had stepped on his leg leaving it with a compound fracture. He was standing and eating on his own and with our help he is doing the best he can. His efforts are inspiring for this family on a long week of helping calves get their start on life this spring.

About Beer Ranch

I'm a farm/ranch wife and mother of 4. I've lived all my life on a farm caring for Angus cows. Currently we raise cattle and a variety of crops including wheat, corn, sunflowers, millet and peas. It is a great life and great way to raise children. We live and learn everyday about the world God has made for us. We try to find better ways of taking care of the land while raising food for people.
